The Princess Vlei is the gateway to the wetland system that runs through Grassy Park, purifying the water before it runs into the sea. The Princess Vlei Forum is a nonprofit, non-partisan organisation. It was officially constituted on October 31, 2012, but has grown out of a ten year struggle to protect the vlei from commercial development. Its activities revolve around four key objectives:
- To protect the space now and in the future from inappropriate development
- To re-imagine the space as a nature and heritage park
- To claim the space - encourage community use of the space for different activities
- To connect and empower communities through networking and organized action
- The Princess is developed to benefit both communities and nature…
- We all help decide on how to make our vlei a precious asset for ourselves and our children…
We have spoken to many people about what they want to see at Princess Vlei, and put these ideas together to form the People’s Plan. Our dream for the Princess, as expressed in our proposal to the World Design Capital2014, is to enrich and extend this plan through discussions with all who have an interest in Princess Vlei.
We mourn the loss of our greatest leader, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Hamba kahle, Tata. We will always be grateful for your living testimony to the power of humility, compassion, integrity and courage. Long may your spirit walk amongst us. May we honour you not with empty words, but by expressing your values in all that we do.
